I have a couple of favorites.

Pip and Estella from Charles Dicken's Great Expectations. Pip's unrequited love for Estella, a young woman trained by her wealthy, adoptive mother to treat men cruelly because of her own broken heart, is beyond Pip's reach, both socially and emotionally. Her beauty compels Pip to make himself a better man in the hopes that she will fall in love with him once he's a proper gentleman, even though she treats him badly. The complex nature of their relationship is one of the most interesting pairings in fiction.

I will also add Edmond Dante's and Mercedes in Alexander Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo as an interesting fictional couple. The strength of their love for each other even after several decades of separation including the time when she marries another man and has a son with him is inspiring. (less)

Netflix's production of The Crown is extraordinary.

Every once in a while a television series comes along that seizes your imagination by the throat and won't let go. Seeing Downton Abbey was that way for me. I will put The Tudors and Breaking Bad in that category as well. I must now add The Crown to the list of stories that keep me enraptured episode after episode late into the night.

The writing, acting, costumes, and scenery are exceptional. And Read more of this blog post »

“Wisdom is being able to see the world for what it is, rather than what you want it to be.”
Patrick F. Rooney, The Angel of Innisfree

“Do not be afraid; our fate
Cannot be taken from us; it is a gift.”
Dante Alighieri, Inferno

“Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man's soul in his body long past the point at which the body should have surrendered it.”
Laura Hillenbrand, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption

“Some people standby you in your darkest hour while others walk away; only a select few march towards you and become even closer friends.”
Jeffrey Archer, Only Time Will Tell

“So does nobody care about Ireland?"
"Nobody. Neither King Louis, nor King Billie, nor King James." He nodded thoughtfully. "The fate of Ireland will be decided by men not a single one of whom gives a damn about her. That is her tragedy.”
Edward Rutherfurd, The Rebels of Ireland

“For me, where genre ends and literature begins doesn’t matter. What matters is whether a given novel hits me with high impact. If it does, it probably is fulfilling the purpose of fiction. It has drawn me into a story world, held me captive, taken me on a journey with characters like none I’ve ever met, revealed truths I’ve somehow always known and insights that rock my brain. It’s filled me with awe, which is to say it’s made me see the familiar in a wholly new way and made the unfamiliar a foundational part of me. It both entertains and matters. It both captures our age and becomes timelessly great. It does all that with the sturdy tools of story and the flair of narrative art.”
Donald Maass, Writing 21st Century Fiction: High Impact Techniques for Exceptional Storytelling
